Coaches eligibility at competitions, events and test sessions
In keeping with the standards of many youth sports organizations, schools and recreational programs in America today, U.S. Figure Skating has implemented coaching requirements, background screening and continuing education requirements to help ensure that we are providing a safe environment and protecting the welfare of all participants in U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned activities. This will help give parents the highest degree of confidence that their children are not only receiving good care and proper instruction but are safe from improper conduct.
There are various requirements that all coaches must complete prior to being eligible to coach at U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned events. As a club, it is required that coaches eligibility is verified based on the following two requirements.
Requirement 1: Coaches Registration
To verify that coaches have completed this requirement, please use the "Registered Coaches" links in the upper right. In addition, coaches are required to carry their "Coaches Registration Card" with them to U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned events. A temporary card is available for print for registered coaches throughout the season on the Members Only site.
*A "Coaches Registration Card" should be carried by coaches at all times when at a U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned event. This card should be treated similar to a driver's license; you may not always need to show it, but a coach must be able to present it upon request.*
Requirement 2: CER Compliance
This requirement is dependent on the competition and event the coach attends with his or her skater. To verify that coaches have completed their CER compliance, please visit skatepsa.com and scroll to the bottom right-hand side of the home page for the updated list of compliant coaches based on category.
Below you will find a table displaying which CER category is required for your specific category.

Note: It is the responsibility of the hosting club to enforce these requirements at their events. If a coach is not registered or is not compliant as of Oct. 1, 2010, he or she will not be able to work with skaters at the competition, event or test session. This includes going into the locker room with skater(s), standing with skater(s) prior to and following the event or competition, standing by the boards while the skater is on the ice and coaching on any unofficial or official practice ice hosted by the competition or event.
Tips to help clubs enforce coach eligibility requirements
- 1. Plan ahead. When accepting skater or team entry forms, verify the coaches status as soon as the form is received. If the coach is not registered or compliant, contact the coach as soon as possible. This will give him or her the opportunity to complete these requirements to be eligible in time for the event.
2. Contact skater or parent. If one to two weeks prior to the event a coach does not meet these requirements, contact the skater or skater's parents to notify them of their coach's status. This may serve as an additional way to encourage the coach to complete the requirements prior to the event.
3. On-site notification/Final notice. When a skater or coach registers for the event upon arrival, notify the skater or coach of the coach's status. He or she will then have the opportunity to go online and complete the requirements.
*If a coach does not meet the requirements in time for the event or test session, the club must inform the coach of his or her ineligibility and ask him or her to leave all coaches areas of the event or test session.*
